Closets come in different designs. Some are made with a single long hanging rod and a single open shelf above it. Others have a number of open shelves of varying sizes stacked over each other. Still others have drawers instead of shelves.
Drawers, like the shelves, allow you to separate different types of clothing and to group those that are similar. You can, for instance, put all your shirts in one drawer, all your socks in another, and all you underwear in still another. In this way, if you open a drawer and see running shorts, you will immediately know that your neckties are somewhere else.
The advantage of drawers over shelves is that they are closed. While both of them work well as far as organization is concerned, drawers beat shelves hands down when it comes to protecting your things from dust and dirt.
Shelves are also typically taller than drawers. This is because you need an open space in a shelf’s upper section to retrieve items, such as shirts, stored in it. You need to lift it up before you pull it out. Simply pulling an item would crumple and mess up the remaining items. Drawers, on the other hand, can be filled to the brim. When you need to take an item, pulling the drawer out will give you all the open space you need to lift whatever you want to take out. The result is that you can store more clothing with drawers than with shelves.
Drawers can be built into the closet. They can also come in portable consoles that can be easily moved from one location to another. Built-in drawers are typically made of wood, which can be solid or engineered. Portable consoles, on the other hand, can also be made of plastic in addition to wood. These can be installed inside reach-in as well as walk-in closets.
