Organizing a Walk-In Closet

Tips on how to organize a walk-in closet.

Many homeowners dream of having a walk-in closet in their bedrooms. They believe that if they had one, their days of being unable to find the clothes they wish to wear would be over. They would have plenty of room for each type clothing and accessory, and even a place for a life size mirror where they can slowly pirouette to inspect every inch of their get-up.

A large walk-in closet may indeed present a solution to your closet organizing problems. However, you will still need to do the things you had to do with your tight reach-in closet or cramped freestanding armoire to be able to enjoy a walk-in closet.

You still have to sort, classify, and arrange your clothes, putting similar items together. Shirts stay with shirts, slacks with slacks, and skirts with skirts. You can also sort them according to the occasions they are needed –office clothes, party attire, or casual wear.

For your accessories such as belts, ties, or scarves, you can use stackable baskets and put them on one of the open shelves. You can also do the same thing with your small items like you handkerchiefs, socks, stockings, and underwear. This will not only make it easy for you to find them, but also maximize your use of shelf space.

There are many types of shoes. There are shoes you wear when going to the office, making casual visits to your friends, going shopping, attending formal affairs, or running. You may also have differently colored pairs, and if you are a woman, there almost certainly are more colors. For this reason, a shoe organizer is practically indispensable in any walk-in closet. You may have an entire stack of shelves dedicated to your shoes alone, or you can add one of those freestanding shoe organizers with a bench where you can sit while putting the shoes on, or a hanging shoe holder.

Finally, do not forget a clothes hamper. You do not want your soiled clothes lying on the floor in some corner of the walk-in closet. And of course neither do you want to have to neatly fold them. A clothes hamper is the happy solution. Roll your soiled clothes into a ball and see if you can shoot them into the hamper from the other end of the closet. That should be fun but if it is not, just put the dirty clothes in there anyway.
